The Culture Luminaries series continues with Vivian and Jenn of East Meets Dress! Earlier this year, I saw on IG that @eastmeetsdress was doing a pop up of their collection of modern qipao for brides in San Francisco. I am already married and I am not Chinese, but I knew I had to go.

As soon as I walked in, I was flooded with emotion. There were racks of the most stunning qipao lined up against the walls— couples, mothers and daughters trying on outfits for their upcoming nuptials. In the center sat Chinese tea ceremony sets and twinkling hair accessories

During her own wedding planning process, co-founder Jenn struggled to find a modern qipao and answers to her questions about her wedding tea ceremony. Two years later, together with her maid of honor Vivian, she launched East Meets Dress to help other brides in a similar position.

Looking back, I think the reason their story and business resonated so much for me is because I struggled similarly when I was getting married, and as a result, built a company to help others in my community feel seen and heard. If you have ever struggled with your own rituals and traditions, this conversation is for you.

During our IG Live, Vivian and Jenn shared some of their own experiences that included:

  • Their story: Their company began as a way for brides to honor their culture and their style. It has since expanded into helping these brides not only find a dress but also providing resources on how to plan a modern Asian American wedding.

  • Food and cultural heritage: Jenn and Vivian talked about how trying to recreate traditional home cooked Chinese meals during this time at home and taking pride in their culture through food.

  • Ritual objects: Jenn shared her own wedding dress - the first East Meets Dress dress! And Vivian showed us her tattoo that was inspired by her relationship with her mother.

You can watch the full interview below!

Thank you so much Vivian and Jenn for sharing your ritual objects and stories with us! You can learn more about Vivian, Jenn, and East Meets Dress here.

As I discussed ritual objects with Vivian and Jenn, I am reminded that there are so many ways to celebrate, honor, and even reclaim, our time-honored traditions. I believe ritual objects really help anchor us in these moments— especially during this time.
